Farewell to Glowe

One last look at the sea, and then it is time to leave our Ferienwohnung (vacation house), and the island.

On the Seebrücke

Binz and Sellin

Next day, we all took a drive to see some of Rügen's southern cities on the beach.

Kap Arkona

At the end of the bikeride was Kap Arkona and its twin lighthouses. About this time, I found the camera's panorama mode. Beware, epic 180s ahead.

Andreas' Boat

An old friend of Martin's, Andreas, invited us out to his old sailboat on Kieler Hafen. It was quite beautiful to look at... and breathe in. The hull is original wood from the 1880's, which makes his one of the oldest boats still afloat in Kiel. Andreas takes it out 2-3 times a year, for short pleasure trips with a lady-friend, or for festivals. Andreas has all sorts of weird hobbies, but mainly he's an audiophile. Here we are talking about Zappa in the boat's mahogany cabin...

Hamburg Harbor Rundfahr

A tour of the harbor by boat is a popular way to get to know the city.

This is where Paul Allen's yacht, the Octopus, is being built.

Hamburg is the most efficient harbor in the world: a giant container ship like the Cosco Fortune needs only 2 days to get loaded up.

Kieler Förde

I caught a cargo ship just entering a pool of light on its way out to the Baltic Sea. This is somewhere between Heikendorf and Laboe on the Kieler Förde.

Laboe U-boot Ehrenmal

A 20-minute bike ride from Heikendorf is Laboe, another small village on the Kieler Förde with a tall monument and a real U-boot on the beach. The climb is 15 stories and the view from top is quite impressive. It was completed in 1936 with Adolf himself presiding over the dedication to the Kaiser's WWI marines. It was rededicated in 1954 to the dead sailors of all countries.

Heikendorf Hafen

Nina and Rami wait on the dock while everyone checks out the selection of Fischbrötchen in this floating restaurant. I believe we are all early for the ferry to Kiel, so thankfully there is food.

Dinner on the Harbor

After the excitement of arrival, we all walked down to Heikendorf harbor to eat our evening meal on one of the floating restaurants.

I got to eat Matjesfilet, which as you can see, is pickled herring in a cream sauce with apples and onions, side salad and bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes, but not deep-fried in the french manner). I didn't know it was pickled herring at the time, or I would probably not have ordered it. Good thing! Lecker, lecker, lecker!
